STROUD (NNA) – Anyone interested in an encounter with the work of the groundbreaking German artist Joseph Beuys through the eyes of someone who worked with him and knew him well will have the opportunity to do so later this month.   

In an event organised by Cliff Gorman from the website “worthattention”, which focuses on the works, ideas and events associated with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Rudolf Steiner and Joseph Beuys, the Beuys specialist Rainer Rappmann will present “an evening of films, photos and talk around Joseph Beuys’ ideas on social sculpture” at the Stroud Valleys Artspace at the start of a UK tour.

Rappmann is also scheduled to take part in a programme of events surrounding a major exhibition on Beuys and the Celtic Fringe at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, as well as making presentations both at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and the Social Sculpture Research Unit at Oxford Brookes University.

Rappmann is founder of the FIU Press which emerged from Beuys’ initiative of the Free International University (FIU) and also established the Achberg Beuys Symposiums in Germany.

Beuys, who was influenced by Rudolf Steiner and anthroposophy, is today considered to be one of the most influential artists and art theorists of the twentieth century. He extended the definition of art and developed the idea of social sculpture as the creative involvement in the development of society and politics.
