TEREZIN (NNA) – The international organisation Friends of Waldorf Education has launched an urgent appeal in support of a Camphill community in the Czech Republic which has suffered severe damage as a result of flooding

Ceske Kopisty, which is located near Terezin, lies at the confluence of the rivers Elbe and Stara Ohre and was particularly badly affected by the recent floods. The village includes a biodynamic farm which supplies the community with vegetables. Many of the residents with disabilities work on the farm.

Now the floods have destroyed the whole year’s harvest worth 140,000 euros, depriving the community of its main income. Buildings were also severely damaged. The residents and staff had to be evacuted at very short notice and were only able to save essentials. Currently the cleanup work is in full swing as the community hopes to resume work by September. Many volunteers are helping the community, but the need is still great, the Friends of Waldorf Education say. 

According to the organisation, the insurance will cover about half of the damage and some friends of the institution have also promised further donations. Unfortunately a substantial amount of damage remains, the Friends say, and the community urgently needs, among other things, 10,000 euros for renovation and 5,000 euros to replace the tractor that was destroyed by the flood.

“With your support, the damage caused by floods can be minimised and the survival of the Ceske Kopisty community assured,” Nana Göbel from the Friends of Waldorf Education and Manfred Trautwein from the Association for Anthroposophical Curative Education, Social Therapy and Social Work say in the appeal.
